Windows Vista is going to supposedly have some cool window effects when it comes out. At least enough to require a 3D graphics card. So I started looking into open source software to find something similar. And I have, I installed it on Ubuntu, and am posting in the new graphics enviroment right now. Here is the

The first screenshot is just of my plain background. you can't see it in just the screenshot but the green text on the background is actually moving like the matrix animation.

These screenshots show the plugin cube which controls how switching between workspaces is displayed... note that the movie playing continues to play no matter which way I rotate the cube.. very nifty.

cube normal:

Here is a screenshot of the alt-tab feature modeled after what is supposed to be in windows vista.. note also that the move plays inside the alt-tab window

A lot of the features are hard to get screenshots of so here is a link to a video demostrating them. e.x. windows wobble when you move them.

but seriously, I'm gonna go boot to ubuntu now just to try it out. It looks fucking amazing.

edit: Not sure whether it's required, but I installed Dapper Drake. Starts up VERY quickly compared to Breezy.

I think I'm just going to stick with the old version for awhile, then try a new version in about a month, or whenever Ubuntu auto updates it without me adding additional repositories. I've been looking at forums, and lots of people are having problems after upgrading to the new versions. compiz and xgl are advancing pretty quickly, and it looks like an updated version is released every few days.

Edit: btw ryan, I prefer: $ glxgears -printfps

I'd rather not acknowledge that it's not a benchmark, as I still like to use it as one.

The fact that I get around 6000 fps while Compiz + Xgl are running means that other programs have access to direct rendering. Without direct rendering, glxgears never goes above 150-200 fps for me. So basically, StepMania must have access to direct rendering, it just doesn't know it ^_^

In other news, here is a and a . It is interesting to note that Compiz has about 3-5 changes a day.

Just because glxgears gets more FPS does not mean that direct rendering is enabled... that is basically the entire point of the switch -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark since the fps you get in glxgears is not an accurate indicator of anything really.

All that tells you is the 3D acceleration is working and your drivers are functional... if you type 'glxinfo' and scroll to the top of the output I believe you will find 'Direct Rendering: No'

I didn't know that 3d acceleration and direct rendering were separate things.

Check it out, a bunch of updates just auto-installed for Dapper. They got rid of that annoying "THIS IS NOT THE FINAL ARTWORK." Everything looks all-around better, and compiz still works. ^_^
